The Cribtet is no stranger to the 518 jazz scene. They have made 3 appearances at Chris Sule’s Van Dyke Restaurant & Brewery, two of which were covered by Mirth.
This edition of the band retains a core of 3 musicians, with a new alto saxophonist, and a substitute keyboard player.
The core is led by Delmar Native , drummer Dan Jantson. Other members include bassist Patrick Gordon and tenor saxophonist Gavin Tarling. New to the band is alto saxophonist Mae Czuba and subbing for Aidan Slate is Coyne Connelly.
The best description of the band performing is “they take the music seriously, themselves not so much”. Dan and gang were frequently smiling at themselves. Dan spoke to the audience with humor and was often inspired to compose through odd sounds or personal incidences.
The band plays classic hard bop, a combination of originals and covers by the old masters. The origins of the band were from the University of Hartford, hom of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz. Covers played were compositions by Jackie McLean, Kenny Barron, Thad Jones, Christian McBride, Bobby Watson. and Hoagy Carmichael. Most of the music was medium to fast tempo with the inclusion of a ballad for variety.
