Their electronic press kit describes Combo Daguerre’s style as French latin psychedelic chanson. That description gives a slight idea of what type of performance the audience would witness. The band’s instrumentation is not particularly as heavy sounding like the old psychedelic bands of the 60s, the band had a lighter sound to it. A lot of inspiration from the surf music and reverb heavy guitar instrumentals that preceded the psychedelic era. A heavy Latin influence was apparent with the use of a cuatro and percussion instead the mix a along with many of the songs having a strong bolero or Cumbia. Andres Fonseca and Neil Ochoa provided those grooves without fail. There were also pieces that resembled movie or tv soundtracks. Perhaps a James Bond movie chase sequence or a dubbed Latin version of a beach movie. The reverb based lead guitar of Felipe Wurst and the bass of Dan Martinez gave that impression. There was one number that reminded me of the B52s. A psychedelic light show provided by visual digital artist B. A. Miale added to the experience.
Keyboardist Adele Fournet alternated between a moog and the piano onstage. She was extremely amused by the reverb added to her vocal Mike.
Founder vocalist/ringmaster Oliver Conan played the cuatro. Even though he is originally from Paris, he played the cuatro and brought the Latin sounds from his previous project Chicha Libre and added his native French influence into this Brooklyn based band.
Comparing this sound to that of more popular bands, if you dig the grooves of Austin based Khruangbin, the chances are you would dig these sounds from Brooklyn.
Incidentally, this performance was brought upstate with an alliance with Barbe’s in Brooklyn. A small establishment stoat is rated to be one of the top places to hear world music.
