(Writer: Doug Quimby/ Deanna Bushey)

Banff is a gorgeous National Park in Alberta, Canada. Since 1976, The Banff Centre has sought to showcase their adventurous spirit and environmental culture through an annual film festival. The Banff Mountain Film Festival is comprised of short films coming from all over the globe all centered around the celebration of nature and mountain life. After the entered films are shown at the nine day festival in Banff, the best are selected to be screened at various locations during the World Tour.

The festival is coming to SUNY Adirondack, yet again, for two nights of screening. Tickets are available online with prices ranging from $15 to $30. Students at the college can use their Student ID to get discounted tickets at the Student Center on campus. Last year, tickets were sold out in January. The screenings will take place on February 18 and 19 in the Humanities Building. There are 9 other stops lined up for New York State, and a total of approximately 300 locations in more than 25 countries. Each screening will feature a different line up, all selected specifically to suit local interests.

By taking submissions from international contestants, the film selection contains something for everyone. There are action packed accounts of expeditions, documentation of efforts to sustain wildlife, as well as heartwarming, inspirational stories about overcoming hardships. The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour and the featured films are focused on capturing the adventurous drive, Earth’s beauty, and personal growth that is valued deeply by many. The films in this festival are an important reminder that there’s a beautiful world out there waiting to be seen.
