I have been riding with the Devil Makes Three in my back pocket for almost two decades. This band quietly but consistently has been a part of my life’s mix tape since a friend gave me their The Devil Makes Three CD in 2007. It has ridden up and down the east coast more times than I can count. A staple on any length road trip when I want to sink into the soul filling familiar and just coast for a couple of hours.
Devil Makes Three formed in California in 2001 though all three of the founding members are Vermont natives. The band has gone through a 1/3 personal change in that time. Bassist Lucia Torino passed the baton to MorganEve Swain in 2019 but Pete Bernhard and Cooper McBean have remained the anchors for the band since the beginning. Both are writing contributors. All three musicians lend their voices (as it’s always been) to what makes for an incredible evening if you can catch them on tour.
All three members have done extensive side projects which are all also highly recommended. Pete Bernhard has a couple of solo albums and a tour in Europe this summer. Multi-instrumentalist, Cooper McBean released The Magnolia Sessions in 2022 which is a beautiful folk offering. MorganEve Swain also a multi-instrumentalist fronts The huntress and Holder of Hands when she is not playing upright bass for the Devil Makes Three.
