The soundtrack of our lives way back when was the sweet sound of soul blaring out of our AM radios. Corey Glover & the Soul Experience recreated this sound and made it more relevant with a carefully curated set.
The palette of music from the Temptations, Impressions, Sam & Dave , Otis Redding, Bill Withers , Buddy MIles, Wilson Pickett & the Box Tops , the Eagles was spiced with some originals & an older from Living Color’s golden days. This was topped off with Muddy Waters’ classic “Got My Mojo Working”.
Corey’s selection of tunes were designed to make the audience celebrate life and at the same time think about the violence around us. Listen closely to the lyrics of “Mighty, Mighty” and “I Can’t Write Left Handed” and the message succeeds.
Listening to the vocals was as rewarding as listening to this band. Jeremy Baum is funky as he alternated between the Nord, B3 and piano. Guitarist Daniel Kottmann spent most of the set with his wah wah pedal welded to his foot. On occasion he did break loose shredding the guitar with the rest of the band nodding with approval. Bassist Ivan Bodley played imaginative funky bass lines. Drummer Cleveland Best somehow stayed in the pocket and moved around in it. Saxophonist Neal Spitzer played both tenor and baritone. The highlight of his performance was a double time solo on baritone quoting Miles Davis’ “Milestones”. Exceptional backup vocals were provided by Kottman, Bodley & Spitzer.
The final encore of the set, brought us to the root of all that music, the blues. Corey got the audience to sing along with the band “Got My Mojo Working”.
They certainly had their mojo working .
Corey Glover & the Soul Experience will play the Falcon again on Saturday May 23rd.
