Plains brought their inaugural, and possibly only, tour to Boston’s Royale this past Sunday night. Katie Crutchfield, aka Waxahatchee, and Jess Williamson’s voice harmonized perfectly all night on all ten songs of their bands’ debut album plus a selection of covers and songs from their respective solo catalogs. The show started as the album does with the first three tracks “Summer Sun”, “Problem With It”, and “Line of Sight”. About halfway through the set a glorious rendition of the Waylon Jennings classic “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” led to a full crowd sing a long. The encore featured show opener MJ Lenderman, who had played a stunning opening set full of rockers alongside his tremendous band, come back out to help with Robert Earl Keen’s “Amarillo Highway” and the world premiere of a new Waxahatchee song “Right Back to It”. The evening ended with “Goodbye Earl” by The Chicks that Katie and Jess said was one of their favorite songs of all time.
