Recap: Grain Thief Stealing Hearts at Colony in Woodstock

Grain Thief is a Boston based string band who brought their roots sound to Colony in Woodstock, NY last weekend. The band played a balanced fusion of Americana and bluegrass with a single Trumpet Microphone to broadcast their vocals into the packed bar. On this particular night the quintet was short their bass player Michael Harmon. They more than made do with Twisted Pine’s multi-instrumentalist Dan Bui who proved he was just as talented on bass as he is in his own band on mandolin. Patrick Mulroy (guitar) and Zach Meyer (mandolin) both lead on vocals. Alex Barstow (fiddle) and Tom Farrell (resonator guitar) filled in the sound with their impressive chops.

Fans are excitedly anticipating their new album coming out this summer called House of the Dog with 11 brand new tracks! We got a few little teasers and heard 3 of those tracks the other night… 54 Miles to Empty, Heartbreak & Red Wine and the fast paced ripper, Methadone Mile.

The set was kicked off with Diesel Baby, Drinking to You and a fun cover of Seminole Winds. Tequila Bottle, Funkfish John, Cranberry Rock rolled right into Grassy Creek, Heartbreak & Red Wine, 54 Miles to Empty, Sorry You’re Sick made for the meat of the set. The guys finished up with a Bobby Bare cover of Streets of Baltimore, Methadone Mile and Seeds and Stems. Check out their website for more tour dates and make sure to get out to Podunk Bluegrass Festival in Goshen CT on August 7th to catch these guys for a damn good time.
