The latest body of work from indie punk rockers E.R.I.E., The Highs, marks the first time the upstate New York-based band has been able to write and workshop songs in the same room, thanks in large part to the multi-year health crisis that struck mere weeks after the band’s first ever live performance. The Highs, The Lows, And Everything In Between is a concept record in three EP-sized parts – a poignant examination of the music industry both past and present. Part one of the record was released September 27 via Mint 400 Records.
Thematically, the EP looks back fondly on making music at a young age, and sends an emotional nod of appreciation to the people and places that have supported the band along the way. It features an array of talent hailing from the Capital Region, including Alec Lewis as producer, and Erin Harkes and Sydney Worthley on vocals.
The EP opens with an infectious guitar riff on “A Lot To Think About,” an intro that sports a distinct pop-punk tone. The backing vocals are the highlight of this song, making for a catchy pre-chorus. One of the standout aspects of this tune are the chord changes over the lyrics “I’m not too old for keeping the dream alive / But I’m much too young to die,” adding a touch of melancholy to an otherwise uptempo number.
The second song, “Over It,” kicks off with distinct power chords. The guitar work on this tune truly shines, as it is reminiscent of the bright, jangly pop-rock sounds of 2000s bands such as the Killers. The backing vocals shine on this song as well, proving E.R.I.E.’s pop songwriting abilities. The bass guitar is a standout instrument on “Hard Headed,” with the guitar folded evenly into the mix. The chord descension from F to E over the lyrics “If you want me to leave, you can tell me to go / But I’m hard headed” gives the tail end of the chorus a bit of haunt. A personal favorite, the closing number “Legacy Act,” showcases the band’s pop sensibilities best with a memorable chorus and interesting dynamics throughout.
The other parts of the trilogy are set for release in the coming months, with the lows expected to release late fall 2024,…And Everything In Between in early 2025.
