Crooked Coast has been leaving an impact with their own sound since the early 2010’s and just released a new song called “Natural.” The band will be making their debut at ADK Music Festival this year on August 31st bringing their original music which has a heavy influence from Hip-Hop, Alt Rock and Punk. We decided to chat with Crooked Coast’s Luke Vose about the year, ADK Music Festival and even Reuben sandwiches! Read the full interview below:
Mirth Films: What are some musical influences that got everyone into playing live music?
Luke Vose: My first concert was Cypress Hill so a lot 90’s/2000’s hip hop was a big influence. A lot of alt rock and punk bands like Rancid too. Ben and John are big fans of The Strokes and Oasis. Shaq brings a lot of pop punk and metal influences to the table. We all have really varied taste though.
MF: What are you most excited for when it comes to ADK Music Festival 2024?
LV: To be honest I’m excited to see the lake. It’s such a gorgeous part of the country. I’m bringing a bathing suit.
MF: Your song “Natural” just recently got released. Looking back, what do like about the song the most? How was the recording process?
LV: I love how the the rhythm is swung on it. It’s heavy and funky. We recorded it with producer Gary Cioffi. We did a lot if pre production together and then he just wrung a great performance out of of us. Gary is an animal.
MF: Any swifties in the band?
LV: I have a seven year old daughter who likes her so by proxy I’m a bit of swiftly. The other day I was walking her and her cousins to school and my daughter was talking about Nina Simone, who she’d just read a boom about. She said she was the first black person to sing in some particular theatre and her cousin responded “Yeah. Taylor Swift was the first white person to sing.” I didn’t have the heart to correct her.
MF: You guys pull a lot from punk and hip hop. Who are some monumental acts that shaped sound of the band?
LV: Biggie, Jay Z, Nas, Blink 182, Green Day to name a few.
MF: What are some of the highlights from this summer so far?
LV: We host our own festival on Cape Cod called Coast-Fest. We had Andy Frasco co headline it this year. It was an absolute blast.
MF: Who are some folks that have helped you guys get to where you are today?
LV: Joel Hanks from Badfish was an early supporter who would have us open up for them. That definitely got us in front of some fans. Our manager Ian Miller has been instrumental in our growth as a band. Most importantly though our families our supportive. Being married to a musician isn’t always easy. Couldn’t do it without them.
MF: Who are some of your favorite acts that You’ve been able to share the stage with?
LV: We played Boston Calling and Nine Inch Nails absolutely blew my mind. For such dark music it was amazing to see how much fun they were having on stage. Just did a little tour with a band called Tropidelic and they had an incredible live show. Also super chill and friendly dudes.
MF: What are your thoughts on the Reuben Sandwich?
LV: Love it. Whenever we play NYC we get monster Rubens from Katz. Shaq gets the cow tongue sandwich, which is actually really good. I don’t think you should be putting fish or lobster in a Ruben though. That’s not cool.
MF: How can fans best support Crooked Coast in 2024?
LV: Sign up for our Only Fans. JK. Come to a show, buy some merch. Share the music with your friends. Show up early at ADK fest and party with us!
