Recap: Kildeer Trio Opens the Jazz On Jay Season in Schenectady, NY

Even though jazz is thought of as an urban music; the rural residences of the musicians clearly have an influence on the style. Guitarists Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell are clear examples of this.

Kildeer Trio hails from Otsego County, southwest of Schenectady with Oneonta as the largest city nearby. The band has been together for 2 years and got the opportunity to play 90 minute set of all originals.

Guitarist Wyatt Ambrose introduced the tunes with a wry sense of self deprecating humor. The music was melodic yet dense and complex. Bassist Evan Jagels and drummer Sebastian Green weaved jagged patterns that somehow made sense.

For those who have attended the Jazz on Jay series in the past, the location has changed and has made for a better listening and viewing experience. It is located at Jay Square, a pocket park with some picnic tables and seating with plenty more located near the corner of Liberty Street and Jay Street across from the Court House that was built by the Metroplex. The Proctor’s Collaborative under Linnea Brice provided extra tents and shelter for the musicians and the audience, the Schenectady Downtown Improvement Corporation and Local 85-133 of the American Federation of Musicians as well as other organizations also made this performance and the other performances possible.
