After a six month hiatus from live shows, Burlington, VT’s newest “jam-rock-donkey-disco” band, Double You, kicked off their second residency at Nectar’s on Wednesday, May 5th. For those who are not sure what “donkey disco” means, come down to Nectar’s and find out! Just because they weren’t playing on stage though doesn’t mean they were sleeping on writing new music and tuning up old songs. Double You spent countless hours of their free time workshopping, perfecting, and writing in order to bring the jam scene some hot new music.

This dynamic, high-energy quintet began the first set with their original song “In My Sleep”, followed by a crowd favorite, The Slick Zone. Audience members sang along and laughed at the song’s ridiculous lyrics. The band then covered a groovy rendition of “After Midnight.” They left nothing on the table after the first set, leaving those in attendance wondering just what would come next.

Second set launched Nectar’s into high gear with a cosmic cover of Hall and Oates’ “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do).” Then, after a few originals, the band burst into a spontaneous cover of “Tequila” which had the whole house bouncing, singing along, and raising their drinks. They also debuted a new song, “Runaway,” written by guitarist Ben Chadwick. Another favorite, “The Station,” got everyone out of their seats and singing. They even sandwiched klezmer classic’s “Hava Nagila” into The Station. Double You finished out the show with their original song “Greasy Warrior pt. 2,” the first half of which is available on Spotify.

Double You is only just beginning, but they are quickly gaining traction in the jam band scene. Between scoring spots on multiple summer festival lineups, headlining at local venues, and cranking out a new album, it’s hard to believe this young band has only been playing together for just over a year. There is definitely much more to come from these guys.
